15. Modesty (Humility)

A mountain hidden within the earth — modesty held quietly inside. The humble person ultimately gains the most; carry yourself with quiet grace and the benefits will last.

Judgment Text (Original): 亨,君子有终
Plain-Language Translation: Prevailing — the noble person sees things through to a good end.
Tuan Commentary (Original): 谦,亨,天道下济而光明,地道卑而上行。天道亏盈而益谦,地道变盈而流谦,鬼神害盈而福谦,人道恶盈而好谦。谦尊而光,卑而不可逾,君子之终也
Plain-Language Translation: Qian prevails, because heaven's way descends and yet shines bright, while earth's way, though lowly, moves upward. Heaven's way diminishes what is full and augments what is modest; earth's way alters what is full, letting it flow toward what is modest; spirits harm what is full and bless what is modest; and the way of humankind despises fullness and loves modesty. The modest person shines all the brighter in a position of honor, and no one can surpass them even in a humble place — this is how the noble person sees things through to a good end.
Image Commentary (Original): 地中有山,谦;君子以裒多益寡,称物平施
Plain-Language Translation: A mountain lies hidden within the earth, humble outside yet substantial within, picturing modesty; the noble person reduces excess and supplements what is lacking, measuring things out fairly.

Modern Application Guide

Career: Staying humble and low-key earns more recognition than fighting for credit.

Relationships: Yielding and understanding smooth over friction — the one willing to step back first often gains the most.

Wealth: A modest, steady approach to money — not flaunting it — brings lasting financial security.

Health: Quiet practices like meditation or stillness suit this period better than a high-intensity workout.
