23. Splitting Apart (Splitting Apart)

Yin overtakes yang, like rock crumbling from a mountain. Fortune is at a low point — stay still, protect yourself, and avoid rash moves while you wait for the tide to turn.

Judgment Text (Original): 不利有攸往
Plain-Language Translation: Not favorable to move forward.
Tuan Commentary (Original): 剥,剥也,柔变刚也。不利有攸往,小人长也。顺而止之,观象也。君子尚消息盈虚,天行也
Plain-Language Translation: Bo means falling away — the yielding gradually transforms and erodes the firm. It is not favorable to move forward, since the way of petty people is on the rise. Yielding to circumstance and staying still — this is the insight gained from observing the hexagram's image. The noble person values the rhythm of waxing and waning, fullness and emptiness, which is simply the movement of heaven itself.
Image Commentary (Original): 山附地上,剥;上以厚下,安宅
Plain-Language Translation: The mountain rests upon the earth, picturing erosion and decay; those above should treat those below generously, to keep the foundation secure.

Modern Application Guide

Career: Conditions are unfavorable — stay conservative, reduce your exposure to risk, and wait for things to turn.

Relationships: The relationship is at a low point — don't force anything or make big decisions; give each other some room.

Wealth: Financially, focus on protecting what you have — avoid new investments or big spending right now.

Health: The body is at a low ebb — prioritize rest and protection over anything that drains your energy.
