36. Darkening of the Light (Concealment)

Light is dimmed and injured. Circumstances are unfavorable and your talents may go unrecognized — stay low-key, protect your energy, and wait for a better moment to act.

Judgment Text (Original):
Plain-Language Translation: Favorable to hold steadfastly through hardship.
Tuan Commentary (Original):
Plain-Language Translation: Brightness sinks into the earth — this is Mingyi ("brightness injured"). Inner brilliance paired with outer gentleness and endurance, bearing great hardship in this way, was how King Wen conducted himself. Favorable to hold steadfastly through hardship means concealing one's own brightness; keeping one's resolve upright amid inner adversity was how Jizi conducted himself.
Image Commentary (Original):
Plain-Language Translation: Brightness sinks into the earth, picturing injured light; the noble person governs others with inner clarity while outwardly staying discreet.

Modern Application Guide

Career: Your talents may go unrecognized for now, or conditions aren't in your favor — stay low-key, build strength, and wait.

Relationships: If you feel misunderstood or held back in the relationship, there's no need to argue it out right away — stay steady inside.

Wealth: When conditions are unfavorable, manage money cautiously and keep a low profile rather than making bold financial moves.

Health: When body and mind feel weighed down, finding a private outlet helps more than gritting through it.

Line-by-Line Detail

Things are just getting underway; strength is still building, and the moment to show it openly hasn't arrived.

Sitting in the inner middle position, a gentle, cooperative approach suits best — this is a supporting role, not a leading one.

You're right at the boundary between inner and outer — the situation is prone to twists, and tests are likely.

You're close to the center now, in a sensitive, receptive spot — supporting the effort suits better than leading it.

You hold the central position but carry it gently — leaning on capable people and staying open to good advice actually works in your favor.

This chapter is drawing to a close, settling into stillness — a time to look back and let things settle.
