52. Keeping Still (Mountain) (Stillness)

Mountain resting upon mountain, calm and unmoved. Now is the time to stop acting impulsively and turn inward — stillness brings clarity, and restraint keeps mistakes at bay.

Judgment Text (Original): 艮其背,不获其身,行其庭,不见其人,无咎
Plain-Language Translation: Stillness at the back, not moving the body; walking through the courtyard yet not seeing the people there — without blame.
Tuan Commentary (Original): 艮,止也。时止则止,时行则行,动静不失其时,其道光明。艮其止,止其所也。上下敌应,不相与也。是以不获其身,行其庭不见其人,无咎也
Plain-Language Translation: Gen means stillness. Stopping when it is time to stop, moving when it is time to move — when both action and stillness never miss their proper moment, this way is bright and clear. The stopping that Gen speaks of is stopping in the place where one belongs. The lines above and below oppose each other and do not respond, each unconcerned with the other. Hence not moving the body, walking through the courtyard yet not seeing the people there — in this way there is no blame.
Image Commentary (Original): 兼山,艮;君子以思不出其位
Plain-Language Translation: Mountain upon mountain, picturing stillness; the noble person keeps their thoughts within the bounds of their own place.

Modern Application Guide

Career: Pause and reassess your direction rather than pushing blindly forward — quiet reflection sharpens the decision.

Relationships: Instead of rushing to fix things, take some quiet time apart to work out what you actually want.

Wealth: This isn't a moment for big moves — watching quietly and deciding carefully is the wiser path.

Health: A good time for meditation or other still, quiet practices that give body and mind real rest.
